It all started in the early 1900s when local officials decided they wanted to create a city park to offer a respite from the stresses of everyday life and to strengthen the local economy. After much debate and a referendum, the Port Charlotte City Council voted to approve the formation of what is now Centennial Park. In 1927, the park was renamed Centennial Park in honor of Port Charlotte’s 100-year anniversary (it was founded in 1827). The park was developed in the late 1920s and early 1930s with funding from the federal government’s assistance program, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the local Reos Land & Development Co., and the Port Charlotte Town Council. Centennial Park has grown over the years, and today it includes a variety of activities and attractions. Picnic areas with grills are available for gatherings, and playgrounds and a basketball court offer plenty of fun for the whole family.
